A vision patient with the need for a highly specialized assistive device became known to a Doctor within the Lions Low Vision Network. Local Lions provided the patient with transportation to the Doctor’s office for a Low Vision Assessments aimed at identifying the right Low Vision product that could improve his quality of life.

Once the product was identified it was evident that the patient could not cover the expense of the needed device and did not have suitable insurance coverage.

When the situation became known to the Lions Club in the patient’s home town the local club initiated a fund-raising event (a charity dinner) to defray the cost. Local residents and Lions from throughout Massachusetts attended the dinner which was a huge success.

In parallel, the Lions Low Vision Doctor who had originated awareness of the case negotiated a reduced price from the manufacturer that included follow up support services.

The remaining balance required to purchase the device was covered by a Lions District fund.

At one time, this patient would likely have foregone this device. But, today, because of the Lions direct service, the Lions Low Vision Network and community resources all coming together his quality of life has improved in a significant way.
